FIFA World Cup in Qatar
It is of common knowledge that the FIFA decided that Doha/Qatar hosts the FIFA World cup in 2022. Certainly, the climatic conditions in the Gulf State are a subject of discussion, especially in summertime. The state of Qatar was able to present a reference object with the Al-Sadd stadium in Doha.
In 2009, KRANTZ KOMPONENTEN has delivered step displacement outlets for this football stadium. The aim of this reference stadium was to test whether it is possible to achieve a comfortable climate in the spectator stand as well as on the football pitch. With the above-mentioned step displacement outlets the air conditioning of the spectator stands was achieved and jet nozzles were used for the football pitch. The jet nozzles throw the air from the sidelines to the football pitch.
These displacement outlets create a microclimate in the spectator’s area, which surrounds the spectator and provides a temperature of 26°C.
A condition for that is that the supply air surrounds the persons evenly and that no velocity peaks occur that might cause unpleasant drafts. As you can see on the photo, the chilled air surrounds the person pleasantly. The volume flow rate for each person is 16 l/s [60 m³/h], and it can be further increased without restrictions in comfort.
The Al-Sadd Stadium is the reference object for air-conditioned stadiums and this system will influence other planned stadium constructions in Qatar as well.
